Loan Periods

Loan periods vary according to the category of client and the type of material borrowed. The basic general loan period for all client categories is two weeks. Two week renewed materials may be recalled and loan periods shortened if requested by another client. Some client categories may be entitled to longer loans but these materials may be recalled and loan periods shortened if requested by another client. If clients are planning on being away for an extended period of time please make arrangements for someone to return recalled materials by the recalled due date. Primary clients may renew University of Alberta books a maximum of four times and NEOS books a maximum of two times. For details on client categories and privileges, inquire at a service desk.

Primary Clients
UA Academic staff and UA Graduate Students Term loans can be recalled after 2 weeks (Sept.-Jan., Jan.-May, May-Sept.)
UA Undergraduate Students 2-week loans can be recalled if renewed
Distance Education 4-week loans can be recalled after 2 weeks
UA Law
3rd/4th yr. Medicine
4th yr. Honours
Education Diploma
and Disabled students
6-week loans can be recalled after 2 weeks
UA Non-academic staff 6-week loans can be recalled after 2 weeks

 

Loan Period Exceptions Applicable to Most Client Categories

  • Periodicals may be checked out any day of the week for a two week loan. Periodicals can be renewed once.
  • Specialized materials such as Curriculum Library materials, government documents, maps and audiovisual materials may have restricted loan periods. Check with individual libraries.
  • Special Collection materials are in-house use only for all client categories.

Reserve Room Loan Periods:

  • 2-hour daytime loans.
    Overnight loans from 2 hours before close, due back at opening the next morning.
  • 1-day loan (Law collection)

Some reserve materials may be restricted to use by University of Alberta students, faculty and staff only. Please check with individual libraries.

Partnership Clients

NEOS Clients

A two week loan period is available to NEOS Clients with no limit on the number of items borrowed unless restricted by the loaning library. University of Alberta books may be renewed a maximum of two times. Two week renewed materials may be recalled and loan periods shortened if requested by another client. NEOS clients should inquire about interlibrary loan provision or access to external databases through their individual member libraries.

TAL Clients

A two week loan period is available to TAL clients with a limit of up to ten items on loan concurrently. A TAL library card may be used to borrow books only. University of Alberta books may be renewed a maximum of four times. Two week renewed materials may be recalled and loan periods shortened if requested by another client.

A TAL library card does not include off-campus access privileges to most on-line databases or electronic journals. For interlibrary loan services, please contact the Interlibrary Loan Office, 2nd floor, Cameron Library.

COPPUL/OCUL Clients

A two week loan period is available to COPPUL/OCUL clients with a limit of ten items on loan concurrently. University of Alberta books may be renewed a maximum of four times. Two week renewed materials may be recalled and loan periods shortened if requested by another client.

External Clients

A two week loan period is available to External Clients, with a limit of ten items on loan concurrently. University of Alberta books may be renewed a maximum of four times. Two week renewed materials may be recalled and loan periods shortened if requested by another client. An external library card does not include off-campus access privileges to most on-line databases or electronic journals. Note: Partnership and External Clients have in-house access only to materials in some specialized collections such those in the Curriculum Library, the Music Library, and library collections of sound and video recordings.
