The First Nations Information Connection...

...is an initiative of the University of Alberta Libraries in collaboration with First Nations institutions and in partnership with Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, Sun Microsystems, OCLC, and Nexen Inc.

The FNIC facilitates learning in place and transferability for First Nations students among Provincial post-secondary institutions, supporting the Campus Alberta concept.

Participants

...enhances access to collections and resources

Participating institutions share a common web-accessible library catalogue. The FNIC portal provides access to the wide array of online resources licensed through the Lois Hole Campus Alberta Digital Library, as well as a rich collection of aboriginal-themed e-books. Students and instructors have ready access to the academic research environment shared by Albertan post-secondary learners.

...enables access to quality online information and cultural treasures

The FNIC portal connects anyone interested in First Nations issues to a multitude of reliable and regularly updated web resources, digitized photographs and artifacts, aboriginal health information, historical and scientific information, reference and community resources.

...increases technical capacity

Participating institutions now use robust software to manage and administer library functions. Each participating institution has received upgraded hardware as well as ongoing technical support.

...builds community

The FNIC provides an opportunity for library staff at First Nations colleges to get to know each other, to access educational and professional development opportunities and to develop skills that will benefit the communities they serve.
