Wireless Connection Not-So-FAQs (but just in case you were wondering....)

1.  On the AICT UWS Wireless instructions for using the Windows automatic setup installer, it states "The installer does not work on Windows XP with Service Pack 3. UWS does work with service pack 3 but must be set-up manually. Please read on."  How can I check to figure out which Windows XP Service Pack I am using?

2.  On the AICT UWS Wireless instructions for using the Windows automatic setup installer, it states that Windows XP 64 Bit Edition is not supported.  Which version is supported, and how can I tell whether I am using this version of Windows XP?

3.  On the AICT UWS Wireless instructions for using the MAC automatic setup installer, it states that MAC OS X 10.3.9 or earlier is not supported.  What do I do if I do not have MAC OS X 10.4 or 10.5?

4.  The AICT UWS Connection Page states If nothing happens after Step 7 in Windows XP or Step 4 in Windows Vista, you might have a 3rd party wireless supplicant interfering with the setup. If you know the name of the supplicant, turn it off and try again. What is a ‘wireless supplicant' and how would a I know whether I have a ‘3rd party wireless supplicant' installed on my laptop?

  • To determine which Windows XP Service Pack you are using:
    • Go to your Desktop
    • Right Click on My Computer
    • Select Properties

For an illustration of the above see:  http://www.yorktech.com/wireless/WindowsXP/Determine%20SP.htm.

2.  On the AICT UWS Wireless instructions for using the Windows automatic setup installer, it states that Windows XP 64 Bit Edition is not supported.  Which version is supported, and how can I tell whether I am using this version of Windows XP?

  • The 32 Bit version of Windows XP is supported.

  • According to one contributor to an online forum, 'If you have to ask, you're probably using the 32 Bit version', but to determine conclusively which version you are using:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to Help/About Internet Explorer
  • Click on the System Info button.
  • Find the System Type line in the Item column
  • Check the Value column for the version of Windows XP that is currently installed.
  • If it states x86-based PC, you have the 32 Bit version installed
  • If it states x64-based PC, you have the 64 Bit version installed

3.  On the AICT UWS Wireless instructions for using the MAC automatic setup installer, it states that MAC OS X 10.3.9 or earlier is not supported.  What do I do if I do not have MAC OS X 10.4 or 10.5?

  • If you have no reason to continue using the older OS, you should upgrade to 10.4 or 10.5.  You can do this by checking for upgrades and installing the recommended upgrades.  On your laptop, go to Apple Menu/Software Update/Check Now, select items to install and click on Install Now.  Since you will not be able to access the UWS Wireless network until you upgrade, you will have to do this from home or from some other network.

  • If you have MAC OS X 10.3.9 installed and do not wish to upgrade because you have an application that will not work with later versions of MAC OS X, you can use the manual method of configuring your MAC for UWS access.

  • If you have a version of MAC OS X earlier than OS X 10.3.9 and do not wish to upgrade because have an application that will not work with later versions of MAC OS X, but you wish to be able to access the UWS Wireless network, there may be a way to do so, but we in the Library are not sufficiently expert to advise on whether it is possible nor how to do this and suggest that you contact the AICT HelpDesk if you wish to pursue this.

  • To determine whether a wireless supplicant is installed on your computer, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs in Windows XP or go to Programs and Features in Windows Vista.  Browse the list of installed programs for one that sounds like it might be a supplicant.

  • HOWEVER, it is not a good idea to play around with software if you are not sure what it is and how to configure it properly.  If you suspect a 3rd party wireless supplicant is interfering with your access to UWS wireless, and you don't know how to identify the program or turn it off, it is strongly recommended that you seek assistance from the AICT HelpDesk.
