Impressions of Vancouver: Disciples of the Book Arts

February through mid-April 2007

Monday to Friday - 10:00 am to 4:30 pm
Mar 3 - 31 only: Saturdays - 11:00 am to 4:00 pm

This exhibit offers a collection of im(press)ions not only of the artists and artisans at work in the Vancouver region but also of the numerous facets of the art itself. As readers, we are often estranged from the skill and painstaking labour required to create fine books, since mass-market publishers tend to treat their products as little more than carriers of information. As an antidote to this estrangement, we would do well to acquaint ourselves with these Vancouver-based disciples, whose creations speak of an intellectual, aesthetic, and material devotion to the art of the book. For each aspect-typography, design, letterpress printing, bookbinding, and illustration-the curators have selected some of Vancouver's foremost "disciples": practitioners whose deft hands, creative ingenuity, and keen aesthetic sensibilities have made the region so rich in bookmaking talent. The range of book arts and the versatility of its disciples make this a delightfully motley exhibit. (The catalogue is priced at $5 and is available at the Bruce Peel Special Collections reference desk.)
