Mary-Jo began her career in the accounting profession with Ernst & Whinney Chartered accountants. Thereafter, she moved to the Government of Alberta where she held several senior positions responsible for capital funding, tourism and community economic development programs. The lure of a job in the Library System was all she needed to make the move to the University where she has been for more than 13 years. Since 2000, Mary-Jo has held various roles in the Learning Services portfolio as Director and Associate Vice-Provost having overall responsibilities for budget and finance, fund development, communication and strategic planning across the portfolio units. In 2008 Mary-Jo spent the year on secondment to the Office of the Provost, a year she acknowledges was invaluable in understanding the administration of the academic portfolio, returning to the Library and Learning Services in 2009. Immediately prior to her current appointment she held the position of Associate University Librarian, Financial and Information Resources.
Mary-Jo has a BComm from the University of Saskatchewan, a MLIS from San Jose State University and is a PhD candidate at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. Her areas of research interest and publication have been, and will continue to be as diverse as her background and include library leadership, in particular library leadership programming, as well as assessment, financial management and scholarly communication and collection development.
She is a Fellow of the Frye Leadership Institute, and is involved as a leader with the Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute. She also holds certificates in advanced facilitation and public participation.
Mary-Jo guest lectures at the San Jose State SLIS and the University of Alberta School of Library and Information Studies, has developed and co-taught the Managing Across Generations course for the Learning Partnership and has presented at numerous library conferences, most recently as the guest speaker at the OCLC Canada Symposium Improving the User Experience and in presenting research a colloquium Library Leadership Development: What does this mean and why should we care? which is used in both their MLIS leadership courses and for ongoing professional development.
Mary-Jo holds memberships in ALA, the Canadian Library Association and because of her continuing interest and engagement in leadership development and research was recently elected to the IFLA standing committee on Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section.
In recent years, she has been a Board Member and held Treasurer positions at various professional and volunteer organizations including, The Alberta Library, the Edmonton Alpine Ski Racing Society, and JH Picard Parent Council Society.
She is married to Terry, a librarian and lawyer, and has three children.
