University of AlbertaUsing ArchiviaNet to Identify Files in RG 10 and RG 15
RG 10 (Record Group 10) contains historical records, chiefly correspondence, relating to Indian Affairs created by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and its predecessors. The Library's holdings consist of the BLACK SERIES and selected parts of the RED SERIES and CENTRAL REGISTRY FILES.
- The BLACK (Western) SERIES covers the administration of Indian Affairs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, North-West Territories and British Columbia from 1872-1959. The bulk of the records concern the period 1872-1923.
- The RED (Eastern) SERIES deals with almost all aspects of the administration of Indian Affairs in eastern Canada from 1872-1964. The bulk of the records concern the period 1872-1923. The Library has selected holdings.
- The CENTRAL REGISTRY FILES consist of documents relating to all aspects of the administration of Indian Affairs in Canada. Subjects include education, mining rights, surveys surrenders, band council minutes and surveys of reserves.
RG 15 (Record Group 15) or MÉTIS SCRIP MATERIAL contains documents recording scrip settlements (land grants) awarded by the federal government to the Métis inhabitants of Manitoba and the former North-West Territories.
Complete records relating to scrip generally consist of the following: affidavits and applications, land and money scrip notes, scrip certificates, receipts, and a number of textual files consisting of letters and memoranda outlining government policies, rulings, and procedures. This ArchiviaNet database and microfilm collection provides access to the affidavits and applications but not comprehensive coverage of all scrip records.
The Library has selected holdings in microfilm.
The ArchiviaNet database provides the most efficient access. ArchiviaNet is the online research tool of the National Archives of Canada; it allows keyword searching within specific record groups (Indian Affairs - RG10; Interior - RG15). Search results include record group numbers as well as series, volume, and reel numbers where applicable. The results may also include an access code which indicates any viewing restrictions that have been placed on the material.
Some files have been digitized and can be viewed on ArchiviaNet.
ARCHIVIANET also includes a guide entitled Aboriginal Peoples - Guide to the Records of the Government of Canada http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/0201200109_e.html which includes an introduction to the collection and search tips. Most of the Finding Aids described therein are only available at the National Archives of Canada.
Using ArchiviaNet to Identify Files in RG 10 and RG 15
- Archivianet has two search interfaces. The following instructions are for the newer Archives Search
- Go to the ArchiviaNet database (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/index-e.html)
- Click on the Archives Search link
- Select "Advanced Search"
- Enter "RG10" or "RG15" as "Any keyword"; enter other keywords to construct a more detailed search. Do not attempt to search by any other field listed in the drop down menu. Doing so may erroneously yield no results. Input all search terms in Keyword search only.
- If desired, limit search using "Type of material", "Date", and "Online" access
The U of A Library's holdings of these records are all on microfilm. Check the Conditions of Access section in the item description for the microfilm reel number. If there is no reel number the item has not been microfilmed.
Microfilm reels in the collection and call numbers.
Documents not in the Library's collection: Reproductions may be borrowed from the National Archives via an Interlibrary Loan or purchased via http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html.
Fragile documents are sometimes only available by visiting the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. Ask for details at the Reference Desk.
