Returning library materials
You can return books to any University of Alberta Library Service Desks or at any of our conveniently located drop-off boxes.

Please return books borrowed from the University of Alberta to one of our library locations. Returns made to other TAL libraries (such as the Edmonton Public Library) can cause delays of several weeks in the item being cleared from your account, potentially leading to overdue notices, fines, and suspension of borrowing privileges.
Recalls
Borrowed material will be recalled if requested by another user.
- If a book that you are borrowing gets recalled, you will receive an email with the Subject: "Library Due Date Update"
- You have 7 days to return the recalled item(s)
- Recall notices are not sent for items that are already overdue
- Library account is blocked after 1 day over the recall due date
Renewals
Renewal dates are dependant on borrower type as outlined on the Loan Periods website.
- Automatic renewals are in place for current U of A student and employees as well as Alumni.
- Other borrowers can renew library material through My Account or by the Ask Us methods.
Notifications
Email notifications are sent to inform users that items are ready for hold pickup, recalled, coming due and overdue.
Coming due notifications are sent according to this schedule:
- Due date reminder (2 days before)
- Due date reminder (on due date)
Recalled notifications:
- If a book that you are borrowing gets recalled, you will receive an email with the Subject: "Library Due Date Update"
- You have 7 days to return the recalled item(s) and the new due date will be indicated on the recall notification email.
- Recall notices are not sent for items that are already overdue
- Library account is blocked after 1 day over the recall due date
Overdue notifications:
- Overdue items reminders are sent at 2 / 21 / 28 days overdue mark.
- At 31 days overdue, items are considered Lost. Overdue reminders are sent 7 days before and on the day the Lost Item Charge will block your account. The charge for Lost items is $150/item.
- Course Materials (UA Students + Employees only): Due time sent at time of check-out. Block applied at 31 minutes overdue.
- Monthly summary of fines owed
Use My Account to check the status of Loans, Holds + Requests, view Notices and Pay Fees.
